Heartgard vs Sentinel - Expert's CommentsHeartgard, and the generic medications containing ivermectin (the active ingredient in Heartgard) prevent heartworm disease. These are sold as once monthly tablets. Heartgard has no effect on fleas or intestinal worms, so it will be necessary to treat for these with another product, or products.
Sentinel Spectrum prevents heartworm disease, and treats roundworms, whipworms and hookworms in dogs. It contains an additional ingredient that breaks the flea life cycle by inhibiting flea egg development. It may be necessary to kill the adult fleas with another product in addition to using Sentinel Spectrum.
Which product you use depends on the time of year, the areas you live in, and so which other parasites you need to control and whether you wish to combine the heartworm prevention with other parasite treatments. All of these are very good products which are both safe and effective. For more information, visit our product sites Heartgard Plus and Sentinel Spectrum. Heartgard vs Sentinel - Customers' FeedbackI use Sentinel. I don't know that the two products are that much different. Go with the one your vet prefers or with whichever one is cheaper. Heartguard and Interceptor do not kill fleas. But Sentinel doesn't kill them either, it makes them sterile so they can't reproduce, but they can still bite your dog, or you. I use Heartguard. I've heard some concerns regarding Heartguard Plus. Unfortuantely I can't remember exactly what the issues were. And, I personally don't like to give my dogs meds for something they may or may not get. I will test them for parasites occasionally and if there may be a question that they may have it. So far I've never had to use anything except when breeding my bitch and when they were pups. I have, for many years, used Heartgard Plus monthly and Frontline Plus when needed. The Heartgard Plus is given always on the 1st day of the month and the Frontline Plus on the 15th of the month. This is the reason I do not use the combo products like Sentinel, I just do not want to put that much chemical in/on my dogs at the same time. Sentinel is actually a combination of both Interceptor and Program. Sentinel is a heartworm preventitive. Program works by breaking the flea life cycle. It prevents the flea eggs from hatching so you will not have more larvae/adult fleas in your home. Program DOES NOT kill adult fleas nor does it prevent new fleas from jumping on your dog. If you have a really bad flea infestation or if your dog suffers from flea bite allergies I would not suggest using Sentinel (or Program by itself). Some people like Sentinel b/c it is combined with flea prevention. However the problem with Sentinel and fleas is that it does not kill adult fleas, only the eggs that are laid. My understanding is the Sentinel does a better job with other types of worms. We don't have a problem with them and actually at the advice of our vet cut our sentienels in half each month. They don't do as well with the worming, but we don't have a problem with worms (other than the hw, which is why we give it). I used Sentinel and had no issues with it. Expensive though. Which is why I'll be putting the dogs on Interceptor, which is the same thing without the flea birth control in it.
